Emitt Rhodes was an unsung hero of the 1960s rock music. A pioneer of psychedelic rock and an innovator of power-pop, he made a lasting impact on the singer-songwriter movement of the 1970s and beyond.
Rhodes has been referred to as the One-Man-Beatles, he recording three albums in his home-studio playing all the instruments and writing the songs much like McCartney's first solo album.
After playing drums with The Palace Guard, in 1967 he formed Southern California rock band, The Merry-Go-Round. He took the melodic Beatles-influenced sound of the day and turned it into a musical vision of his own. His gem-like songs ran deeper and have lasted longer than many of the Top 40 hits of the times. He was a producer, songwriter, singer, performer, and a friend to so many in the L.A. area.
And it all happened from his home studio in a quiet neighborhood of California where, a decade earlier, The Beach Boys were born.
In 1973, while he was signed to ABC/Dunhill and under pressure to fulfill an unrealistic record contract, he left the music business and became a local legendary enigma; a well-kept secret in the music culture of L.A. But he remained available to other musicians looking for a studio and producer. He continued to help others create music.
In 2016, with the help of producer and artist Chris Price along with The Bangles, Richard Thompson, Aimee Mann, and Jason Falkner, Emitt Rhodes released his first collection of new material in 43 years, Rainbow Ends. It has been critically acclaimed as one of the best albums of the last 20 years.
When he tragically left us in July of this year, a devoted following of fans, friends and family have continued to carry on his legacy. This show will include artists who were influenced by his music. It will be a time for some fine musicians to celebrate one of the great pop geniuses of his time. It will be a time to say goodbye to Emitt Rhodes even as we welcome and embrace his ongoing legacy.
